Music
Benjamin has always strived to incorporate music into his personal and professional life.
He is currently a Music Therapy Fellow at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, supporting the department through his participation in the world-famous RMH Scrub Choir, live music volunteering in the hospital, advocacy and research.
Benjamin’s sustained involvement as a Music Therapy volunteer has been recognised by the Victorian Minister of Health, and in 2016 he was awarded the Minister of Health’s Young Volunteer of the Year Award.
Benjamin’s involvement with the RMH Scrub Choir has also led to amazing opportunities - including travelling to New York as part of Scrub Choir to promote Sustainable Development Goal 3 at the United Nations 2023 SDG Summit (in collaboration with the World Health Organisation)
SBS Australia’s Biggest Singalong
Published June 2021
The RMH Scrub Choir were featured in the SBS special, ‘Australia’s Biggest Singalong’. The clip, broadcast to a national audience, featured interviews by Music Therapist/Scrub Choir Director, Dr Emma O’Brien OAM, as well as choristers Ana Suto (RN) and Dr Benjamin Sutu.
Here is an excerpt from the TV special which featured the RMH Scrub Choir.
Gratitude by the RMH Scrub Choir
In its most personal song to date, the RMH Scrub Choir are back with an original number entitled ‘Gratitude’.
Written by Dr Emma O’Brien OAM, ‘Gratitude’ was composed based on a hospital-wide staff survey of their experiences in the frontline of the pandemic. It is a song of hope, strength and resilience.

The Power
A virtual jam by longstanding Music Therapy volunteers, Dr Benjamin Sutu and Hong Yang.
Integrating elements of Eye of the Tiger and Flight of the Bumblebee, this is a fun cover that managed to catch the attention of Delta Goodrem AM herself (There’s a very special shout out on Twitter by the Australian superstar - see here! And a re-post of the cover on Delta’s Instagram - see here!)
Music from the Home Front
In April 2021, the RMH Scrub Choir were asked to perform a special rendition of We’re All In This Together with artists Ben Lee and Gordi.
This special performance at Music for the Home Front (organised by Mushroom Music Group and Frontier Touring) was played to a sold-out venue of 2800 patrons (the COVID-safe venue capacity for the Sidney Myer Music Bowl), and broadcast to a national TV audience of over 1.49 million viewers.
